Key Point: Never use a forklift for a
job it is not designed to do.
|
There are many different types of attachments that
assist with the handling of all types of goods. They can generally be
broken into two groups:
Key Point: Ensure the attachment and
load carried are appropriate for the capacity of the industrial
truck.
|
PERMANENTLY FITTED ATTACHMENTS
Attachments that are basically permanently fixed to an
industrial truck (such as a paper roll clamp used at newspaper printers)
usually has been sized and checked by the company supplying that device,
provided the correct capacity industrial truck is being used. When
carrying out the assessment, the tare weight and centre of gravity (load
centre) of the attachment would be provided and also the mass of the
paper roll. A similar approach would be taken in a wool bale storage
facility where the industrial trucks only load the one product. This
makes the use of an attachment quite safe because the industrial truck's
rated capacity is satisfactory for the loads being lifted and
transported.
REMOVABLE ATTACHMENTS
Tare Weight: The weight of the object
in question, which with the addition of the weight of the load
being carried gives the gross weight.
|
Before any attachment is purchased or used, a person
needs to know:
-
has it been designed to attach to a specific
capacity or type of industrial truck?
-
what is the maximum safe load the attachment can
lift and transport?
-
has the manufacturer provided a tare weight for
the attachment and a centre of gravity (load centre) for the
attachment itself?
-
the safe working load of the attachment must be
downgraded if a smaller capacity industrial truck is to be used.
JIB ATTACHMENT
To check that the jib attachment is suitable for the
industrial truck, the following needs to be considered:
In this example, the maximum rated capacity of the
industrial truck is 5 tonne at 600mm load centre.
Tare weight of jib is 800kg
Centre of gravity (load centre) of the actual jib is
700mm
Jib load centre
|
700mm
|
= 1.166
|
Forklift load centre
|
600mm
|
|
Mass of jib at 600mm load centre = 1.166 x 800kg =
933kg
Actual lift capacity = 5000 - 933kg - 30kg
(lifting chains = 30kg.)
At the 600mm load centre = 4037kg
Reduced to 80% Due to Dynamic Loads:
Lifting Position(A) (900mm Load Centre)
600mm x 4037kg x .8 = 2153kg S.W.L. kg.
900mm
Maximum rated capacity = 2149kg @ 900mm L.C.
Lifting Position(B) 1200mm Load Centre
600mm x 4037kg x .8 = 1615kg.
1200mm
Maximum rated capacity = 1615kg @1200mm L.C.
Lifting Position(C) 1500mm Load Centre
600mm x 4037kg x .8 = 1292kg
1500mm
Maximum rated capacity = 1292kg @1500mm L.C.
The above provides safe working loads for the three
lifting points and incorporates the reduction to 80% of the rated
capacity due to the additional dynamic loads.
NOTE:
-
Because the measuring point for the load centre
may be 400mm in front of the axle centre line, the above figures
would be erring well on the side of safe lifting.
-
For this exercise, a nominal deduction of 30kg was
allowed for the lifting chains, however, no further deduction was
taken into account regarding load centres greater than 600mm.
WORK PLATFORM
Where other means of lifting workers are impractical,
a work platform can be used to perform tasks of short duration, but this
does not include order picking or stores type of activity. When using a
work platform the following requirements must be met:
-
for a counter-balanced truck, the rated capacity
must be equal to 1800kg or 5 times the combined mass of the tare
weight of the platform and its safe working load.
-
a flow control device is required to be fitted to
the hydraulic mast cylinder to limit the platform descent to a
maximum of 0.6 metres/second in case of a burst hose.
-
platform maximum swl 250 kg.
-
platform to be mounted on forks and have duplicate
independent mechanical locks.
-
special instructions to be provided to the
operator include:
-
travelling controls in neutral position and park
brake engaged;
-
mast set in vertical position;
-
operator to stay at the controls at all times;
and
-
check for overhead obstructions before raising
the platform.
Further information about the use of work platforms is
contained in AS2359 Part 1 - 1995.
